Down syndrome

**Surprise! October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month!** 🌟

**Let’s not forget that March 21 is Down Syndrome Awareness Day!**

Hello! For those who may not know, Down syndrome occurs when there is an extra copy of genetic material from chromosome 21 due to changes in cell division. This can lead to developmental challenges and unique facial features, along with potential heart and thyroid issues.

**What about Autism?**

Absolutely! About 16-18% of individuals with Down syndrome may also have autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, it’s important to keep in mind the following:

- Just like individuals with autism, people with Down syndrome have their own unique skills and reach milestones at different times.

- The traits of autism can manifest differently in those who also have Down syndrome.

- Even individuals with Down syndrome who don’t have autism might display some behaviors similar to those seen in autistic individuals.

- Many helpful strategies and interventions for autistic individuals can also benefit those with Down syndrome.

Medical professionals can perform additional screenings, and early intervention programs are incredibly helpful! These programs collaborate with therapists and special educators to ensure each child receives the personalized support they need to thrive.

Let me introduce you to a student I work with named Hamza. He’s a sweet and energetic soul! I believe everyone has a unique way of shining, which fuels my passion for helping others through social work. My own experiences living with cerebral palsy have emphasized the importance of speaking up for myself and doing so with positivity and respect.

My journey toward becoming a social worker began when I was fifteen. I found myself mediating a family argument between my aunt and uncle for two hours! Even though I couldn't physically intervene, I was able to help them see each other’s perspectives. It was then that I realized I couldn’t just stand by when people needed help. I discovered the power of my voice, and it empowered me to advocate not only for myself but also for others.

Having a physical disability gives me a deep sense of empathy for those facing their own challenges. I want to help my clients find their voices. Everyone deserves to express their feelings and beliefs confidently. Your voice is a powerful tool that no one can take away from you, even in tough times.

As a social worker, I aspire to inspire my clients to find their voices and share their stories in ways that feel comfortable to them.

Writing is another passion of mine that ties into my interest in social work. It allows me to express myself and work through my feelings. Through writing, I’ve learned a lot about patience, authenticity, dedication, and confidence. It has also helped me advocate for important causes and share my journey with others. I even started a heartfelt blog called "The Shining Star," where I write about various topics that inspire me.

Through my blog, I connect with readers from around the world—people from the United States, Poland, India, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, France, Kuwait, and the Philippines! It’s a fantastic way to raise awareness about issues such as educational inequality, gender roles, media representation, the plight of Syrian refugees, and current events in Egypt. Writing has opened my eyes to the world, empowering me to speak up for myself and others.
