2 Craig, H. (2015). Syrian Refugees in Jordan as an Opportunity for Development. JUIS: Journal of Undergraduate International Studies, 1917-26. I have this journal article from hofstra

Abstract

The article discusses the refugees of Syria who have taken shelter in Jordan, stating that millions of refugees have originated in the regions of Middle East within the time period from World War II because of the reason of regional conflict but have benefited Jordan with all round development. I have this journal article from hofstra

This article is useful because not only does it talk about the history of refugees in the Middle East, but it discusses the opportunities that Syrian refugees have to work in Jordan and move on with their lives despite the tragedy. In my paper I plan to write sections not only on the Syrian refugee crisis but I also want to about positive conditions such as how Syrian refugees are recovering and moving on with their lives in other countries.

Empirical evidence from Jordan. Defense and Peace Economics, 27(1), 64-86. doi:10.1080/10242694.2015.1055936 I have this journal article from hofstra.

Abstract This paper analyzes time-sensitive data on a humanitarian crisis in the Middle East. It aims to assess the impact of the steep influx of Syrian refugees into Jordan on the country’s labor market since the onset of the conflict in Syria (March 2011). As of August 2014, nearly 3 million registered Syrians have sought refuge in neighboring countries (Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and Turkey), according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Jordan and Lebanon are hosting the majority of them. This paper utilizes data regarding unemployment rates, employment rates, labor force participation, the number of refugees, and economic activity at the level of governorates. The Vector Autoregressive (VAR) methodology is used to examine time series data from the most affected governorates in Jordan. The empirical results of Granger causality tests and impulse response functions show that there is no relationship between the influx of Syrian refugees and the Jordanian labor market.

I want to write about a few of the many impacts that Syrian refugees have the in the world labor market. Ali Fakih is a professor at the Department of Economics, School of Business Lebanese American University. I have this journal article from Hofstra.

In this study we analyzed the perceptions about Syrian refugees as reflected in the newspapers. A qualitative design based on content analysis was adopted in this research. The news on Syrian refugees appeared in Hurried, Yen Safak and Cumhuriyet newspapers between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2014 have been analyzed. These were classified on the basis of themes, styles, main concepts, and photographs used. Our findings show that, the political standing of the newspapers and their attitudes towards the Turkish government strongly affect the ways they shape the news about Syrian refugees. Abstract

Turkey has been a stage for human mobility for many years, yet it did not have a comprehensive migration and asylum regime until recently. Being the worst refugee crisis of the last decades, the Syrian crisis actually had an impact on developing such a regime of which the Law on Foreigners and International Protection (LFIP) is a crucial element. The LFIP provides temporary protection to the Syrians in Turkey. However, it is recently observed that more and more Syrians are leaving the country. Examining their exodus, the present article is seeking answers to the question of why are the Syrians desperately trying to leave Turkey?” Two arguments are put forth in the article. First, Turkey’s new migration and asylum regime has not been able to decrease the refugees’ vulnerability because of its “expectation of temporariness”. Secondly, it is argued that Turkey’s “new asylum regime” is in fact “not that new” due to the fact that asylum-seekers coming from non-European countries have been provided a de facto temporary protection. The article reveals that the Syrian refugees are vulnerable in many fields mainly because they are subject to a protection regime marked by temporariness. As the regime is putting them in limbo, they are leaving Turkey. Turkey’s new asylum regime appears not that new after all. This article talks about the impact of Syrian civil war (which I will discuss in my paper) and how vulnerable Syrian refugees are. There are two arguments in this article. First, Turkey’s new migration and asylum regime has not been able to decrease the refugees’ vulnerability because of its “expectation of temporariness”. Secondly, it is argued that Turkey’s “new asylum regime” is in fact “not that new” due to the fact that asylum-seekers coming from non-European countries have been provided a de facto temporary protection. . I want to discuss the migration of Syrian refugees’ and how they get asylum.
