Kishimoto said that hinata and him were going to be together since the original design, and she was supposed to be his love interest throughout the naruto series. The only reason he made sakura as his “love interest” is because he wanted to give the series a bigger plot by misleading the viewers. That led to him going even as far as making sakuras character very similar to kushina since in the shippuden episode kushina told naruto “get you someone like me”.

To conclude,


Naruto never knew that what he has for hinata is deep rooted love, until the movie. He, of course, started realizing it when she took his hand during the war arc after nejis death and snapped him out of his potential downfall by saying “Thanks Hinata, it’s all thanks to you standing by my side” .
