Thomas Spence “How to Raise Boys Who Read and David Brooks” The Medium is the Medium’” both address the role of books and reading in our lives. Thomas Spence believes that the role of books is to create civilized men in society. David Brooks” believes that Books in the literary world allow people to have a well rounded identity that helps you become cultivated, one that keeps individuals well informed about current events, and gives you the ability to master significant skills. He argues that the Internet culture may produce better conversationalists, but the literary world makes better students. Therefore, even though I agree with Thomas Spence that and David Brooks” Arguments, I do not believe that books and reading are the only elements to cultivate people into civilized beings . I believe that if people have a good education they can gain the abilities to read, become good conversationalists, obtain knowledge from any information, especially books without having to rely on the internet culture that society has become so dependent on. As a result, I will prove this point by discussing what I believe the role of books really is in society and how having a good education incorporates everything people need to know to not only be intelligent readers, but ultimately a good education allows people to be productive members of society.

In my opinion, there are many roles of books and reading in society. Reading books is not only to make people civilized like Thomas Spence thinks. Reading books ALSO encourages people to be creative, learn new vocabulary, dive into imaginary, worlds that have unique stories, and loveable characters. As a result, I think that reading books helps people grow through the exposure of new ideas about society’s history, culture, sports, arts, cooking and writing. This is why I believe reading books is important because there is infinite amount of Information that any one or a group of people can learn about or develop skill in one area of expertise by reading books TO expand their knowledge and become better people, citizens. The role of books and reading in society is also to help people find solutions to their problems, or escape reality. Reading books helps people find friends with the same interests that they have. Reading books helps people in so many ways to improve their lives and find wisdom by experiences from other authors to gain more perspective on different aspects. Finally, after reading David Brooks” The Medium is the Medium’”. I realized that in communication sometimes the medium is the message. In other words how you send a message is a message and it can be more important that your original message.

Education is the most fundamental principle in modern society. That is why I agree with Thomas Spence’s claim that education is training for freedom which he uses a quote from C. S. Lewis “’ the little animal will not at first have the right responses.” It must be training to feel pleasure disgust and hatred….. I THINK that this quote is true because without education human would be animals due to the fact that we would not have the ability to reason right from wrong. Therefore we would not be able to read, so forget about knowing what the role of books and reading were in society. We would not know how to function in society without an education. Education trains and teaches people to be civilized human beings through the teaching many different elements including being thought to write, math, science, have a good conversation, and be thought to read and the value of books in society.

In conclusion I believe that books and reading are NOT the only elements to cultivate people because I believe that if people have a good education they can gain the abilities to read, become good conversationalists, obtain knowledge from any information, especially books without having to rely on the internet culture that society has become so dependent on. Having a good education incorporates everything people need to know to not only be intelligent readers, but ultimately a good education allows people to be productive members of society.
