True beauty is skin deep

Sarah Elgohary Sensation and perception Dr. Ploran My Reaction to the Strabismus Surgery debate People know that it is wrong to judge a book by its cover, but people always do it anyway. Why is that? There is a saying which I believe that says that “True beauty is only skin deep.” If true beauty is only skin deep is truly the case, in our society. Then, why is an individual’s appearance the first thing that people will judge about individuals, when we first meet them without getting to know the personalities of individuals. The reason that people who have Strabismus get the surgery to fix the alignment of their eyes is our society’s instinct to immediately judge people only by their appearance is Even though, people say that getting the surgery is more about fixing the eyes, so people with Strabismus can function better in our society. The surgery is about cosmetics not functionality. People can pretend to be a generous society who is not prejudice on an individual appearance, but we all know that is a lie. I believe that individual people are not as judgmental about foreign individuals (Italian, French, Chinese, people all the time. On the other hand, society as a whole is very discriminating against people who are different from them in American culture. After all, if people with Strabismus always felt acceptance by society as a whole, they would never feel the need to get the surgery in the first place. The problem is that people with Strabismus never feel accepted by society, so they get the surgery to fit in with the rest of society as well as function in it.
