Things are not always what they appear to be. There is a fine line between what things appear to be and what they actually are. Reality is not always black and white. Each person has his or her own perspective and opinions about what reality appear to be and what reality actually is. This is shown in the real world and the literary world as well through the conflicts characters face due the distance between the appearance and reality of the world. This theme is expressed in the work “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien. Tim O’Brien expresses a very strong sense of Antiwar in his short story “The Things They Carried” through his character Jimmy.
People think that it is a very honorable for a solider to die in war for his country. People do not realize that there is a whole entire other side to the reality of war. In addition, to the honor there is the devastation of innocent civilians dying every day very violently and the heavy burden intangible objects that a solider carries through his experiences in war as Tim O’Brien very pessimistically points out in his antiwar piece “The Things They Carried”. In the short story The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien Jimmy thought Martha was in love with him because she sent him letters and always signed the letters love Martha. However, in reality they were not love letters although Jimmy wanted Martha to love him He want to be a college student, in reality he was a young solider whose “greatest fear was the fear of blushing “Tim O’Brien is saying a solider kills men and dies because there are too embarrass not to die for their country. Tim O’Brien is saying that the intangible objects a solider carries carry a heavier burden than the tangible things that soldiers carried with war .The “intangible things soldiers carry will impact soldiers lives forever as an opposed to the tangible things soldiers carry their impact on soldiers is short lived. This is why Tim O’Brien think war is unnecessary the reality of war impact soldiers more than the appearance of war.
