Reaction paper 1 on the Fear of Polio video Week 1 October 5 2012
The Fear of Polio video was very interesting. I did not know much about the serious epidemic of Polio. Polio was a deadly disease that paralyzed the entire body of the victims leaving them completely helpless until I watched the video. POLIO was a virus also known as Poliomyelitis which means gray matter marrow inflammation. There were 2 polio epidemics the first was in 1916 the second was in the 1940-50s during April through September, The virus was strongest the heat, it survived in the summer months from July to September. My all time favorite president Frankin Delano Roosevelt has Polio. The department of health did not understand the epidemic, it is sad that that thousands of people were killed trying to find a cure for polio middle class citizens were all affected. Hospitals’ were over crowed with polio victims there were 18 beds to a room. I think it is very mean that people with Polio were considered a burden to society by their family and friends because of a disease that they had no control over. In addition, I cannot stand the fact those polio victims were looked down upon by society, as the video point out people called polio victims “bad enough to be crippled, worst to be a constant reminder”. I am so inspired by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt because even though he was diagnosed with polio he never gave up. He was able to achieve so many goals during the Great Depression and World War II to make the world a better place to live despite his own disability. I really love the fact that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt brought Warm Springs Georgia after he heard that the minerals in the springs could help treat people with Polio and he heard the people with polio who went to the springs reported feeling better . He bought Warm Springs Georgia and he turned it into the first rehab center for polio victims. P
