The end do not justify the means a new twist on super hero
My favorite hook
Watchmen is not an ordinary superhero story. It is not what you would expect from the genre. In fact, most of the characters do not posses any superhero powers. Yet each individual character has a conflict they need to resolve in the end. At the end of the novel, Ozymandias who is the smartest man in the world ironically decides to demolish a portion of the world in order to achieve world peace. I think Watchmen is a very good representation of the 1980’s, the problem with the Cold War and other issues that were present during that time.
I do not believe that the end justifies the means because Ozymandias destroys millions of people to save billions of people. This action does not justify the killing of so many innocent people. There is no guarantee that another problem will not arise and cause another similar scenario. I feel that Ozymandias is the most unethical character in this novel because he is the smartest man in the world. He could not find another way to solve this nuclear war without killing innocent people in New York. After the superheroes went into hiding as a result of the Keen Act, he is still very successful. He starts his own business as a result of the reputation he gains as a superhero. He takes pride in his reputation because he sells his merchandise based on the superhero he once was. He has the mentality that if he destroys millions of people in New York it will prevent a nuclear war and save the rest of the world and bring about world peace. So, he develops a plan to destroy the town, as a result he is responsible for all the conspiracy from Dr. Manhattan’s exile to Mars to Rorschach’s capture and the Comedian’s death and his own attempted murder. As a result he creates a giant squid and destroys the city in order to save the rest of humanity. After the disaster, Dr. Manhattan comes back to earth and Ozymandias asks him if what he has done is wrong. Dr. Manhattan says there will be violence in the world this is just a temporary solution to the problem. EvenDr. Manhattan could have easily destroyed the nuclear weapons to end the conflict, but he chooses to let humanity fend for themselvesbecause humanity would just take him for granted and expect Dr. Manhattan to save them every time a similar scenario arises. As a result, aDr. Manhattan agrees with Ozymandias plan and kills Rorschach’s because he is going tell the world that Adrian Viedt is the one behind the plan. Even though Adrian’s plan to save the world is successful, I do not believe he does for the good of humanity. I believe he does it because he wants to see if he could save the world just to test the strength and limits of his own abilities. He is selfish and egoistical. He wants to gains the same reputation as his idol Alexander the great. That is why Adrian viedt is the unethical character in the novel.
In my opinion Rorschach is the most heroic and moral character. Ironically, Rorschach sees the world as a filthy corrupt place. Rorschach questions why he tries to save the world when people do not even want to be saved because humanity has become so corrupt. Rorschach sees the good of humanity. Rorschach is the only one who never stops being a vigilante even though he has everything to lose. He fights for what he believes is right. Rorschach is hated by everyone in town expect for Night Owl, in fact Night Owl is his only friend. No one appreciates Rorschach, and is only one who fights for justice. As opposed to Night Owl and Laurie who areonly superheroes because it make feel better about themselves. Rorschach never gives up and is persistent to reach his goals. He always searches for the truth. He cannot pretend to accept something he does not believe is right. That is why he is against Adrian’s plan and wants to warn innocent civilians. Rorschach sacrifices his life for good of humanity that is why he cries when Dr. Manhattan kills him. Rorschach is the only one who sees the good in humanity. That is why he is so determined to tell the world the truth even if he dies because of it. Even though the people will find out the truth about Adrian’s plan from whatRorschach writes in his journal. Rorschach is a tragic hero because he tries to defy Adrian’spower over humanity but he ends up losing his life.
Watchmenisno ordinary graphic novel. It represents the problems of the 1980’s. In addition is also lets the reader imagine what the world would be like if superheroes really did exist. Even though this novel goes against traditional comic books of superheroes saving humanity it shows you the truth about what happens when people become too corrupted with evil and power.
