Life as a house
Identity vs. Role Confusion

There are seven billion people living on Earth. Adolescents can search for their entire lives to find the answers to these questions .Who am I? Why am I here in this world? Am I really needed and loved by others? What do I have to offer the world? What is my purpose in life? I personally ask myself these questions everyday in search of my own identity, but I still have not found the answers I am in Erik Erikson‘s Identity vs. Role Confusion stage of development.
Erik Erikson‘s Identity vs. Role Confusion stage of development is very beautifully through the main character Sam’s actions in own search for his identity through his Role Confusion in the very sad, but uplifting movie Life as a House.

Attachment is defined   as the positive emotional bond that develops between a child and a particularly special individual. There are three types of attachment 1 secure attachment 2 avoidant attachments 3 ambivalent attachment. Sam developed self esteem  when he was working on the house with then and finished his father’s house and he developed an a secure attachment to his father, mother and Melissa .

Autonomy is defined as the development and expression of independence. Gaining a sense of autonomy is one of the primary tasks of adolescence.  In order to attain a sense of autonomy adolescents must develop a view of themselves as unique and different from others have a high self – esteem.  I think that same developed Autonomy when the house was built and he sold it to the girl in the car accident.
Resiliency is defined as the ability to overcome circumstances that places adolescents at high risk for psychological or physical damage like death in a family or divorce
Sam is a very resilient teenage for many reasons.  One example of Sam’s resiliency is his ability to cope with his father’s death through all of the secure attachments he developed with his mother, father, and Melissa.in addition   One example of Sam’s resiliency when Sam was working on the house with his family he invested all of his time and energy into working on it as a result that was his outlet for the pain of losing his father. I also think that building the house is why Sam was to overcome his addiction to weed.
Peers are individuals who are about the age or level of maturity.  Peers are friends, classmates.
Authoritative parenting
The parent is demanding controlling emotionally supportive and responsive. Authoritative parenting, also called 'assertive democratic ‘or 'balanced' parenting,  is characterized by a child-centered approach that holds high expectations of maturity. Authoritative parents can understand how their children are feeling and teach them how to regulate feelings. They often help their children to find appropriate outlets to solve problems. Authoritative parents encourage children to be independent but still place controls and limits on their actions. Extensive verbal give-and-take is not refused, and parents try to be warm and nurturing toward the child. Authoritative parents are not usually as controlling as authoritarian parents, allowing the child to explore more freely, thus having them make their own decisions based upon their own reasoning. Often, authoritative parents produce children who are more independent and self-reliant. An authoritative parenting style mainly results when there is high parental responsiveness and high parental demands Authoritative parents will set clear standards for their children, monitor the limits that they set, and also allow children to develop autonomy. They also expect mature, independent, and age-appropriate behavior of children.

Authoritarian parenting
The parent is demanding very cold but not responsive. Authoritarian parenting, also called strict parenting, is characterized by high expectations of conformity and compliance to parental rules and directions, while allowing little open dialogue between parent and child. Authoritarian parenting is a restrictive, punitive parenting style in which parents make their children follow their directions and respect their work and effort. Authoritarian parents expect much of their child, but generally do not explain the reasoning for the rules or boundaries. Authoritarian parents are less responsive to their child’s needs, and are more likely to ground their child rather than discuss the problem. Authoritarian parenting deals with low parental responsiveness and high parental demand, the parents tend to demand obedience without explanation and focus on status. Children resulting from this type of parenting may have less social competence because the parent generally tells the child what to do instead of allowing the child to choose by him or herself. For example peter the step father was cold and he was not responsive to his sons. In the beginning of the movie the step father peter did not want to hug back when he wanted a hug then the father asked his son if his hands were clean and to go wash him.
Indulgent or permissive parenting
The parent is responsive but not demanding.
Indulgent parenting, also called permissive, nondirective or lenient, is characterized as having few behavioral expectations for the child. "Indulgent parenting is a style of parenting in which parents are very involved with their children but place few demands or controls on them. “Parents are nurturing and accepting, and are very responsive to the child's needs and wishes. Indulgent parents do not require children to regulate themselves or behave appropriately. This may result in creating spoiled brats or "spoiled sweet" children depending on the behavior of the children.
Children of permissive parents may tend to be more impulsive, and as adolescents, may engage more in misconduct, and in drug use. "Children never learn to control their own behavior and always expect to get their way." But in the better cases they are emotionally secure, independent and are willing to learn and accept defeat. They mature quickly and are able to live life without the help of someone else.] Children of permissive parents tend to have lower academic achievement levels than children of authoritative and authoritarian parents.   Sam’s mother was very permissive to Sam not responsive to his emotional needs. It was like she did not care about him anymore or she did not what to with him she had given up on him. That why he was weed to get attention in my opinion.  Eventually the mother became an authoritative parent to Sam after she developed a secure attachment as the house was being built.
] Neglectful parenting
The parent is neither demanding nor responsive
Neglectful parenting is also called uninvolved, detached, dismissive or hands-off. The parents are low in warmth and control, are generally not involved in their child's life, are disengaged, undemanding, low in responsiveness, and do not set limits. Neglectful parenting can also mean dismissing the children's emotions and opinions. Parents are emotionally unsupportive of their children, but will still provide their basic needs. Provide basic needs meaning: food, housing, and toiletries or money for the pre mentioned. Neglectful parenting can stem from a variety of reasons; this includes the parent's prioritizing themselves, lack of encouragement on the parent's parts, financial stresses, lack of support and addiction to harmful substances.
Children whose parents are neglectful develop the sense that other aspects of the parents’ lives are more important than they are. Many children of this parenting style often attempt to provide for themselves or halt depending on the parent to get a feeling of being independent and mature beyond their years.] Parents, and thus their children, often display contradictory behavior. Children become emotionally withdrawn from social situations. This disturbed attachment also impacts relationships later on in life. In adolescence, they may show patterns of truancy and delinquency.

Self-concept is defined as a sense of oneself viewed through the content of work. Sam developed the feeling of Self-concept when the house was completed.
Self esteem. Sam developed the feeling of Self-concept when the house was completed.
self esteem  comfort somebody or something that provides relief from pain or anxiety Sam developed self esteem when he finished his father’s house and he developed an attachment to his father, mother and Melissa .He found comfort in Melissa  her familiarly touch when Sam’s father died. In the being of the movie George found comfort in the hospital when the nice nurse sit next to him to comfort him by her touch on his forehead when he said that he not been touched in years. I LOVED the overall movie but that scene was one of my favorites. It was a sad sweet scene but, it was necessary not only the movie it also points out the most essential need in human nurture comfort
