9 11
I enjoyed the speech on globalization day. There was so many facts about terrorism that I did not know .In my opinion there are many reasons people who just looked Arab were attacked by Americans After 9/11, it just depends on how different people perceive the world we live in andthe structure our society is based on. For example, I think functionalism is a good way to explain why society, the government, and Americans are discriminating and stereotyping all Arabians Middle Eastern, Muslims, and Arab looking people as evil terrorists just because of one group of people who attacked the World Trade Center twelve years ago. The attack on the World Trade Center twelve years ago, and the Taliban changed the world we live in today because it unjustly classified an entire society of innocent people as terrorists just based on the individual actions of one person or one group of people known as terrorists. This shows social inequality because one group of people is being discriminated again and again as a result of an act that was committed by a few individuals not the majority of people from Muslim culture. The speaker still classifies Muslims as foreign people not Americans , she really bothers me with that fact This is unfair but the functionalism perspective does not see it as unfair because a functionalist looks at society as a living organism. In other words, a functionalist looks for stability, and solidarity in a society as a result , every part or action of the ( organism ) serves its own unique function in a society .Each individual function workstogether to keep society running and in order. Even social inequality social stratification, the poor working classes all serve a purpose and are necessary to keep society working according to functionalism. In Functionalism the individual is blamed for social problems not the social structure the system alwaysworks. Functionalists are very conservative they do not like changing that is why it is easier to blame a few individuals for the world’s social problems instead of blaming all of society’s socialproblems on the entire social system. This is why discrimination stereotyping and prejudice of Arabians, Middle Eastern, Muslims, and Arab looking people, are all products of functionalism.
Another sociological perspective to explain why after 9/11 people who just looked Arab were attacked by Americans is Social Conflict Theory. Social ConflictTheory focuses on inequality of power,of powerability to exercise influence and control over others, in producing social order. It states that a society or organization functions so that each individual participant and its groups struggle to maximize their benefits, which inevitably contributes to social change such as changes in politics and revolutions. The theory is mostly applied to explain conflict between social classes, proletarian versus bourgeoisie; and in ideologies such as capitalism versus socialism. It is the theory that a continual struggle exists between all different aspects of a particular society. The struggle that occurs does not always have to involve physical violence, although in these cases violence does happen .An example of Conflict Theory from a world ‘s aspect is factions in Middle Eastern and Western countries are fighting each other, while ignoring the fact that innocent people dying in Syria from chemical weapons due to a corrupt leader alone one nation cannot stand but together there is strength in numbers one person can make a difference in a group of people can cause revolution that is the essence of Conflict Theory. If other the United Nations helps Syria they can overcome an evil president.
Conflict Theory can also pertain to an underlying struggle for each group or individual within a society to maximize its own benefits 9/11 is a good example of one individual or group within a society takes advantage of a people to maximize its own benefits at the expense of others.
