"Sonny's Blues" is a story about two brothers, one who is a good citizen who gives solutions to problems to help the community: as oppose to his youngest brother who is an artist. The tone of “Sonny’s Blues” is melancholy and reminiscent. The brother the narrator hides behind his appearance of high school teacher who seem very happy peaceful, successful with a wife and three children. In reality he completely tries to avoid his cultural identity of an African American who lived in Harlem because he does not want to accept Sonny’s problems and the dark reality of racism. He does not want to be a static just like his brother an Africa American who has supposedly become consumed by darkness. James Baldwin uses darkness as a metaphor to represent the troubles in society. Sonny’s brother refuses to cope with reality He thought he could escape the reality of being African American responsible for his brother problems. It is ironic that James Baldwin names the youngest brother Sonny to convey the conflict of darkness versus light in the story. Sonny may appear to be a bad person who is overwhelmed by a “dark world through his use of drugs, but in reality he is able to cope with this dark reality transforming his world into this beauty through his music. This also changes the brother’s personality from a mean, pessimistic, unsupportive, character that only sees the world’s dark appearance not the true nature of the world’s beauty. He changes into a kind, relaxed, happier, more supportive person who finally sees the light of the world through his Brother Sonny’s music. The brother sees the reality of beauty of the world when he sees Sonny’s passion for music.
Oedipus Rex is a play by Sophocles about false realities and the conflicts between fate and free will. Oedipus is a tragic hero. Fate is inevitable because when Oedipus finds he is adopted his hubris attitude causes him to think that he is doing the “right thing’ by running away to the city of Thebes where he was born. Even though, Oedipus does not know of his tragic fate, he innocently becomes the king of Thebes and married his mother succumbing to fate he was trying avoid. He appears to be this honorable happy king who wants to the “right thing’ for his people by finding and punishing the murder of the last Lauis, but in reality he is too blind to see that he is the murder. This is shown through the dialoage "What's done was well done. Thou canst never shake
my firm belief. A truce to argument.
For, had I sight, I know not with what eyes
I could have met my father in the shades,
or my poor mother, since against the twain
I sinned, a sin no gallows could atone.
Oedipus does not want to belive the reality of the possibility of him killing own father and marring his mother. He even denies when Theresias says “to Oedipus You are the murder you planned it you had done with own two hands” Oedipus “says “You dare say that?”Can you possibility you think you have” Some ways of going free after such insolence”? Oedipus’s hubris attitude keeps him from accept reality. Oedipus finally realizes that he is the murder of his father when Jocasta hangs herself because she could accept reality. Oedipus is already blind to what is right in front of him even if he literary blinds and kills himself after he sees his mother and loving wife hung herself because she could not accept reality This story proves that fate controls all events if people try to deny fate there will be conflicts between the appearance and reality of society.
“War is Kind” “Dulce et Decorum Est” and “The Things They Carried” are all anti war works. The three works theme is that even though war is “a supposed honorable duty for men it is not worth it to sacrifice the lives of men sons and husbands who have left behind loving families. The titles War are Kind” “Dulcet et Decorum Est.” is ironic because war is obviously not kind. War appears to be this honorable responsibility for young men to sacrifice themselves to serve their country. When Stephen Crane uses the lines” Do not weep maiden war is kind your lover threw wild hands towards the sky” Little souls who thirst for fight.” It is as if Stephen Crane is justifying war killing of men because men want to sacrifice themselves as an act of bravery and courage. In reality he is saying the cost of war is not worth the killing of innocent men He says soldiers of war “ are born to drill and die” yet ironically soldiers see this glory of war as if war is this wonderful thing when in reality war is this violent nonsense of killing innocent people for no reason. This is why he emphasizes the line “A field of a thousand corpses lie” in the second and forth stanza of his poem to represent his belief this war is not necessary because the gloried appearance of war does not justify the costs of innocent people dying every day the horrible reality of war. The poem “Dulce ET Decorum Est” also talks about the horrible reality of war it is ironic, the poem “Dulce ET Decorum Est” title literary means sweet and fitting. Wilfred Owen is not saying it is sweet and fitting to die for one’s country in war. Wilfred Owen is saying the appearance of war might be “sweet and fitting” for the soldiers who want to serve in the military because they think it is the most brave, honorable, respectable, duty for young men to sacrifice themselves for their country. When in reality Wilfred Owen, agrees with Stephen Crane the sacrifices men choose to make do not justify the costs of war innocent people dying every day that is the reality of war. In the short story The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien Jimmy thought Martha was in love with him because she sent him letters and always signed the letters love Martha. However, in reality they were not love letters although Jimmy wanted Martha to love him He want to be a college student, in reality he was a young solider whose “greatest fear was the fear of blushing “Tim O’Brien is saying a solider kills men and dies because there are too embarrass not to die for their country. Tim O’Brien is saying that the intangible objects a solider carries carry a heavier burden than the tangible things that soldiers carried with war .The “intangible things soldiers carry will impact soldiers lives forever as an opposed to the tangible things soldiers carry their impact on soldiers is short lived. This is why Tim O’Brien think war is unnecessary the reality of war impact soldiers more than the apperacence of war.
There is always conficts beween the reality and appearance of the world. A person might see reality in a different way than a group of people would see reality. Appearances can deceive true reality. Reality is not black or while. This is shown in the real world and the literary world as well through the conflicts characters face due the distance between the appearance and reality of the world. The works”"Sonny's Blues" by James Baldwin Oedipus Rex by Sophocles “War is Kind” by Stephen Crane “Dulce et Decorum Est. “by Wilfred Owen and The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien are examples of this theme of appearance versus reality.
