People always look forward to watching awards shows for the entertainment appeal. People are just interested in seeing who won the award for best actor or actress, the best movie categories; like who is the most talented musician with the number one album. People pay no attention to how their favorite actors and singers are even nominated in the award show or their votes are even counted in the Grammy awards shows, and the Annual Tejano Music Awards. The voting and nomination process in the Grammy awards shows and the Annual Tejano Music Awards is very complex and time consuming.
Grammy Award (originally called Gramophone Award) – or Grammy – is an accolade by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States to recognize outstanding achievement in the music industry. The annual presentation ceremony features performances by prominent artists, and some of the awards of more popular interest are presented in a widely viewed televised ceremony. It is the music equivalent to the Emmy Awards for television, the Tony Awards for stage performances, and the Academy Awards for motion pictures. The first Grammy Awards ceremony was held on May 4, 1959, and it was set up to honor musical accomplishments by performers for the year 1958. Following the 2011 ceremony, NARAS overhauled many Grammy Award categories for 2012. The 54th Grammy Awards were held on February 12, 2012, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. (http://www.grammy.org/recording-academy/awards/grammy-awards-voting-process).
The Grammy Awards had their origin in the Hollywood Walk of Fame project in the 1950s. As the recording executives chosen for the Walk of Fame (Tabinda Walk) committee worked at compiling a list of important recording industry people who might qualify for a Walk of Fame star, they realized there were many more people who were leaders in their business who would never earn a star on Hollywood Boulevard. The music executives decided to rectify this by creating an award given by their industry similar to the Oscars and the Emmys. This was the beginning of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. After it was decided to create such an award, there was still a question of what to call it; one working title was the Eddie, to honor the inventor of the phonograph, Thomas Edison. They finally settled on using the name of the invention of Emile Berliner, the gramophone, for the awards, which were first given for the year 1958. Members of the Recording Industry Association of America and record companies submit recordings and music videos that have been released during the eligibility year. The eligibility year for the 2012 Grammy awards is October 1, 2010 through September 30, 2011. (http://www.grammy.org/recording-academy/awards/grammy-awards-voting-processOrg).
Over 150 experts in a variety of music fields review entered recordings to make sure they meet the eligibility requirements that they are placed in the proper categories for award consideration. This is the point at which it is determined whether a recording is rock or jazz, pop or Latin, country or dance, etc. Ballots are sent to voting members of the association with lists of all of the eligible recordings in various fields. Members are instructed to vote only in their fields of expertise and in only nine out of a total of thirty one fields represented. The fields include Pop, Rock, Latin, Country, Jazz, etc. All voting members may select nominees in each of the 4 general categories - Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. Some categories are reserved for special nominating committees. To become a voting member of the association an individual must be a music industry professional with creative or technical credits on six commercially released tracks (or their equivalent). These may include vocalists, conductors, songwriters, composers, engineers, producers, instrumentalists, arrangers, art directors; album notes writers, narrators and music video artists and technicians. (http://www.grammy.org/recording-academy/awards/grammy-awards-voting-process).
Some craft and specialized categories are reserved from the general nominations voting. These nominees are selected by national nominating committees selected from among active members of the association in chapter cities. Ballots are sent to voting members of the association with the final nominees in all categories. Members are allowed to vote for the selections to win awards in up to twenty categories plus the four general categories. Winners of the awards are not known until envelopes containing the names of winners are opened at the presentation ceremonies. (http://www.grammy.org/recording-academy/awards/grammy-awards-voting-process)
In the genre field, its main category Best Classical Album has been discontinued because most recipients in this category had also won in one of the other classical categories for the same album. Classical recordings are now eligible for the main Album of the Year category. The Grammy award Nomination process is very detailed and ex Record companies and individuals may submit recordings to be nominated. Nominations are made online and a physical copy of the work is sent to the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Once a work is entered, reviewing sessions are held, by more than 150 experts from the recording industry, to determine whether the work is eligible and entered in the correct category for official nomination .The resulting list is circulated to all NARAS members, each of whom may vote to nominate in the general field (Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist) and in no more than nine out of 30 other fields on their ballots. The five recordings that earn the most votes in each category become the nominees. There may be more than five nominees if there is a tie in the nomination process. Whereas members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are generally invited to screenings or are sent DVDs of movies nominated for Oscars, NARAS members do not receive nominated recordings.(http://www.grammy.org/recording-academy).
After nominees have been determined, final voting ballots are sent to Recording Academy members, who may then vote in the general fields and in no more than eight of the thirty fields. NARAS members are encouraged, but not required, to vote only in their fields of expertise. Ballots are tabulated secretly by the major independent accounting firm Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu. Following the tabulation of votes the winners are announced at the Grammy Awards. The recording with the most votes in a category wins and it is possible to have a tie. Winners are presented with the Grammy Award and those who do not win are given a medal for their nomination. In both voting rounds, Academy members are required to vote based upon quality alone, and not to be influenced by sales, chart performance, personal friendships, regional preferences or company loyalty. The acceptance of gifts is prohibited. Members are urged to vote in a manner that preserves the integrity of the academy. The eligibility period for the 2012 Grammy Awards was October 1, 2010 to September 30, 2011. (http://www.grammy.org/recording-academy)).
The Grammy awards have a special voting record system to keep track of how many awards are won in each category. This system also tells people the rank of the awards from highest to lowest rank form first to third place rank along with the name of the artist who won the award. Finally, the record system last category shows people the total number of Awards each artist has won for that year. The system goes as follows For example. Sir George Solti is the artist with the most Grammy wins because she has thirty one Grammy Awards. Alison Krauss is the biggest winner among female artists with twenty seven awards. U2, with 22 Grammy Awards, holds the record for most awards won by a group. http://www.grammy.org/recording-academy)).
Another awards show with interesting Nomination & Voting Process 2012 –is the 32nd Annual Tejano Music Awards. Annual Tejano Music Awards does not nominate any group, artist or song for any categories. Do not expect or assume w Annual Tejano Music Awards will nominate anyone. Nominations are submitted to the Annual Tejano Music Awards and originate from Artists and Record Labels. If an Artist is not represented by a Record Label, the Artist can nominate themselves. Annual Tejano Music Awards reviews and submits the nominations list to the Nominating and Screening Committee consisting of top select record producers, managers and record label personnel for verification and eligibility. The Nomination and Screening Committee returns the verified nominations for Annual Tejano Music Awards the creation of a ballot. This ballot will then be sent out to the Tejano Industry consisting of Artists, Record Labels, Managers, Radio and News organizations sends the voting results to a Certified Public Accountant for tabulation. The CPA submits the results to. The Annual Tejano Music Awards he top 12 nominees from each category will be included in a General Ballot to be sent out to the General Public and Tejano Industry. (http://www.tejanomusicawards.com/awards-show/nomination-process/).
Artist or Record Labels must submit their material for nomination. TMA does not select nominees nor do they select the Award winners. TMA invites all Tejano groups to submit their material. If material is not submitted for consideration, then they are not included in the Award selection process. Artists are not required to submit any material or may choose not to submit their material. . (http://www.tejanomusicawards.com/awards-show/nomination-process/).
Top twelve nominees are placed, by qualifying category, on the General Ballot and published on the Tejano Music Awards Web site for qualifying voters. If there are tie votes for the twelfth nomination, all tied nominees will be listed on the General Ballot to decide who will be the top nominees. This will sometimes make a category have more than twelve nominees. If there are less than twelve nominees that qualify, Tejano Music Awards will list all nominees that are eligible. If nominees in a category are less than eight, Tejano Music Awards will either eliminate that category or if it makes sense to keep the category will list the category with at least five nominees. Categories with four or less nominees will automatically be eliminated. It is possible for categories to be combined such as for example: Female and Male Entertainer Category or Album Tejano and Album Conjunto Category to make up the top twelfth nominees. All entries must have been released between January first 2011 and December thirty-first, 2011 ((http://www.tejanomusicawards.com/awards-show/nomination-process/).
In all categories, Artist must have actively performed within the eligibility period. Each category must have a minimum of eight eligible nominations. To qualify in “Album of the Year” categories, sixty percent or six music tracks must be new or original renditions. Artists’ or groups nominating in the Best New Artist Award categories do not qualify in the “Album of the Year” category.
Artists’ or groups releasing singles only without a CD release will only qualify for the “Song of the Year” category. All re-mixed material (singles/CD’s) qualifies in Industry Ballot, however only the Producer is eligible. (http://www.tejanomusicawards.com/awards-show/nomination-process/).
Many people misconception about the true reality of popular awards shows. Awards shows are not just about the glamour factor people always miss the entire other side of awards shows. There is a lot of time and effort that goes unseen in voting for awards shows that people do not realize it is very sad.
