More than just a love story the real message of the titanic

Titanic Not Just another Love Story,    The true story

The movie Titanic is a very popular movie in the entertainment industry.  The movie Titanic is not just an epic romance story, but it also a sociological study of the people and times of the 19th century specifically 1912. If you peel away the layers like an onion and look past the talented actors,  the billions of dollars spent on the movie to make it a very successful blockbuster and all of the Academy Awards the movie won you will see that the movie  talks about the different social classes and the different opportunities people have for social mobility to achieve status in order to gain access to resources  like power, money, jobs a house a better life in this unequal socially stratified society. The Titanic is really about two independent individuals from two completely different social classes on the opposite sides  of the spectrum who fall in love and as a result they both to try to break free from the unequal social norms , opportunities and try to escape the reality of their social positions of our hierarchy in America’s socially stratified system  in order to be together.
The ship Titanic was composed of many different people from the wealthy upper class citizens who lived in luxurious suites to very poor working class citizens who were forced to sleep in the lowest decks of the ship because they could not afford to pay for the suite and the trip. The Titanic had people from all different races, ethnic backgrounds from around the world.  Most people on the Titanic were heterosexual because in the middle of the movie there was a scene where Jack convinced Rose to dance with him which led to everyone else dancing and having a party. In addition, to the heterosexual people homosexual men were not socially acceptable in society because it was against social norms and people were afraid anybody who was different from the ordinary in the 19th and 20th centuries. The main characters of the movie were Jack and Rose who are both of white races. Rose is a very wealthy proper, upper class woman who is very refined individual, who is engaged to her fiancé Caledon 'Cal' Hockley from another wealthy family. Rose is set for the future; she has many options’ in life she has access to a lot of resources which leads to a lot of opportunities for social mobility.  On the other hand, Jack is the opposite the focal point of the film, a poor immigrant who wins two tickets to travel on the unsinkable Titanic during a game of poker. He is a very poor artist who is a working class citizen searching for a future, a better life, job  opportunities to move up in society. He wants to become a famous artist around the world. Jack is a white, heterosexual American man Rose is a heterosexual white wealthy English woman from Italy. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Jack Dawson
.While aboard the Titanic, he meets Rose Dewitt Bukater (Kate Winslet), who at one point he saves from jumping from the ship. As Jack begins showing the buttoned-up Rose how to have fun and embrace life, they begin to forge a relationship which is forbidden due to Jack’s low social status. A talented artist, Rose allows Jack to sketch her wearing only the Heart of the Ocean, a magnificent necklace given to her by her fiancé (Hockley). When Hockley finds out about their relationship he imprisons Jack in the Master-at-Arms quarters. Once the ship strikes the iceberg it becomes a race against time for Rose and Jack as they must find a way to escape the doomed vessel.
Kate Winslet plays Rose Dewitt Bukater Rose Dewitt Bukater is 17 during her voyage on the Titanic. She boards with her fiancé Caledon Hockley (Billy Zane) and her mother Ruth (Frances Fisher). Although a wealthy young woman, she struggles with being forced into an arranged marriage by her overly controlling mother. In an act of desperation, she tries to commit suicide by throwing herself overboard, but is saved by Jack Dawson. After getting to know Jack, she learns that he is a talented artist and allows him to draw her wearing nothing but the Heart of the Ocean, an extravagant necklace given to her by Hockley. When the Titanic begins sinking, Rose and Dawson must attempt escaping the ship while evading Hockley and his manservant Spicer Lovejoy (David Warner). Billy Zane plays Caledon “Cal” Hockley
The wealthy fiancé of Rose Dewitt Bukater, Hockley is the quintessential businessman and certified jerk. Playing the main antagonist of the film, Hockley, after learning about the relationship between Jack and Rose, becomes obsessed with imprisoning them aboard the doomed vessel. With the help of his servant Spicer Lovejoy, Hockley numerous times imperils the young pair of Bukater and Dawson and even resorts to firearms at one point. Master manipulator and deceiver, Hockley, after attempting to kill Jack and Rose, boards a lifeboat with a stranger’s child. The mother of Rose Dewitt Bukater, she is responsible for the engagement between Rose and Cal Hockley. She believes she knows what is best for her daughter and that her marriage to Hockley will alleviate her secret financial problems. Her husband’s death left the family in debt and she strives to maintain her high societal status. Even though Jack loves Rose and even saved her daughter’s life, she scorns him due to his low class status.
Frances Fisher plays Ruth Dewitt Bukater, The mother of Rose Dewitt Bukater, she is responsible for the engagement between Rose and Cal Hockley.
In order to present a historic narrative, Cameron added a character who survived the wreck of the Titanic. Gloria Stuart plays the part of Rose Dewitt Bukater, depicted many years after the Titanic disaster. She gives information to Brock Lovett (Bill Paxton) on the Heart of the Ocean after he discovers the drawing of her wearing the necklace. The movie is Rose’s recollection of the events during the sinking of the Titanic.

The movie Titanic is based on the actual tragedy of the Titanic, which sunk in the North Atlantic in 1912. I think the movie version was realistic in how it portrays the sinking of the ship at  the end of movie. The Titanic was the largest, most luxurious ocean liner of its time. The Titanic sunk because it crashed into an iceberg on its maiden voyage on April fourth1912.  It took more than one thousand five hundred of its two thousand two hundred passengers to the bottom. According to an article titled “The-Secret-Of-How-The-Titanic Sunk”, two government investigations conducted immediately after the disaster agreed it was the iceberg; the vessel had gone to the bottom intact. The crash was blamed on the ship's deceased captain, E. J. Smith, who was condemned for racing at 22 knots through a known ice field in the dark waters off the coast of North America www.usnews.com/news/national/articles/2008/09/25/11). In 1997 James Cameron's film Titanic, largely mirrored the scientific consensus at the time, and seared Titanic's terrifying last moments into popular memory, especially the part in the movie when the Titanic’s stern soared high into the air before it cracked in two and disappeared.

Ruth DeWitt Bukater 1867-1931 (Aged 64) is one of the main antagonists in Titanic and the mother of Rose DeWitt Bukater. She was very snobby, rude, selfish, most likely due to the fact that she was consumed by her wealth. After her husband died and left her and Rose penniless, Ruth's gold digging personality went to the extreme and targeted Cal for Rose so that they could remain wealthy. She is played by Frances Fisher.

In 1912, Cal and Rose boarded the Titanic with Ruth. When they boarded, Rose fell for a penniless third-class artist known as Jack Dawson. Although Ruth forbid her daughter to see Jack out of fear that Rose may abandon Cal and her mother and run away with Jack, leaving Ruth penniless. When Rose finally had enough of her mother's snobbish behavior and selfishness, she abandoned both her and Cal and fell in love with Jack. When the Titanic sunk, Ruth escaped in a lifeboat with one of the few kind-hearted passengers, Molly Brown. Ruth survived the Titanic sinking, but never saw her daughter again due to her daughter's immense hatred of her. Ruth died in 1931.   Kate Wins let does a wonderful job portraying her character Rose, a young wealthy woman who is engaged just to please her family to a very demanding wealthy man she does not even love. One of my favorite bits of dialogues in the move is between Kate Winslet and Billy Zane. It starts when Rose says” I am not a foreman in one of your mills that you can command. I am your fiancée.

Cal Hockley: says “My fian... my fiancée! Yes, you are, and my wife. My wife in practice if not yet by law, so you will honor me.  You will honor me the way a wife is required to honor a husband. Because I will not be made a fool, Rose. Is this in any way unclear?” Rose. NO (www. imdb.com /character/quotes).   Although, this dialogue is funny, it shows the realism of this situation a young woman who feels trapped in an unwanted marriage. This dialogue show male dominance he gender role society   r In the beginning of the movie she does everything she is told to please everyone but herself. She does not express her own opinions or emotions. Kate Winslet’s acting is so convincing especially when Rose discovers that she is in love with Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio). She realizes that she has the power to make her own decisions in order to achieve her desires in life. This transforms Kate Winslet‘s character because she starts to stop caring about what other people think of her and becomes an independent person.  This gives Rose the confident to leave her fiancée for Jack and find out who she really is as a person.

The Titanic is a movie which clearly depicts the theories of race, class, gender, and sexuality. The dynamics on the ship is a representation of how society was segregated because they show the different ways people were treated based on these ideas.  The characters are a clear depiction of society at that time. If The Titanic was the only representation of society then it would be clear that there were cleat distinctions. The movie showed that there was a lot of racial tension between people and classes.
