Over the years there have been many controversies over the different policies in our American government. As a result, politicians have been doing more arguing rather than working together to set new policies to help us get out of our economic recession. One of the outcomes of our American government's inaction is its inability to make laws in order to get the country back on track to the standard of living in the United States had before the recession. There are many reasons the Occupy Wall Street Movement has occurred. Although, some people might not agree with the Wall Street Occupy Movement they do realize that something has to change in the way the economy is being run by the American government.
According to David Weidner from the Wall Street Journal, “the Wall Street Occupy Movement was a long time coming” (1). In his opinion, there has been a long thread of Wall Street demonstration that dates back to the Revolutionary War and the establishment of a national bank. He thinks the Wall Street Occupy Movement is very similar to the Hard Hat Riot of 1970 because they both have central themes of inequality of income, and a government beholden to financial interests (2). The only difference is that in the Hard Hat movement greed was running amok. Throughout history, Wall Street has been a convenient target, but really a direct target (2). Wall Street is full of big greedy corporations that only seem to care about the money they make. Corporations do not have any regard for the effort people put in their jobs so they get the enormous sums of money they have. The only reason corporations are so wealthy and have a very high status in our social hierarchy resembling the one percent of rich people in the population is because of how hard the ninety nine percent of American workers work (the middle class). Businesses and our economy are successful because of the work middle class working citizens contribute to our worldwide industries. Yet, one of the reasons the economy is terrible is so many working class citizens are being laid off because businesses want to save money. People have to realize that in order to make money you have to spend money; people are not spending because they do not even have money to spend due to the loss of jobs. On the other hand, the majority of middle class working class citizens who have money to spend use their money to pay bills, not to shop for luxury goods. This proves that in order for our economy to grow there needs to be an increase of jobs; this will lead to people having more to spend on luxury goods. The increase in spending will elevate the economy to help narrow the gap between the rich and poor, which will prevent the inequality of wealth in America.
According to the New Yorker‘s article Titled “A Walk in The Park “ by Hendirk Hertzberg Wall Street Occupy Movement does not occupy Wall Street itself the actual Wall Street movement is in Zuccotti Park which inconveniently named Liberty Park by the demonstrators from Wall Street. The article “A Walk in the Park” from The New Yorker supports the Wall Street movement although, it questions where the movement will end up. The author supports the reasons for the Wall Street movement itself such as unemployment, economic insecurity, the corrupting pervasive impurity of the financial industry, scammers whose greed fraud predicated the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression” (Hertzberg 26 ). Although, Hertzberg agrees with David Weidner, it does point out the fact that protesters do not have list of demands and a set of legislative recommendations on how to fix the policies of Wall Street. Hendirk Hertzberg also acknowledges the fact that these working class citizens have a right to demand change if they are not happy with the conditions of the government (Wall Street corporations).
Not everyone feels the same way about the Wall Street Occupy Movement in fact in this article by anonymous from the Washington Times thinks that “the Wall Street Occupy Movement is made up of losers”(1). The person is saying “Judging by the list of complains most of the Occupy Movement is simply disaffected graduate students. The products of the most left wing institutions in America have discoved that their degrees in useless fields do not deliver instant wealth (1). By the way the person is commenting about the Wall Street Occupy Movement it is almost as if the Washington Times is making fun of the protesters demands in the movement itself. This article says that a substantial number of protesters are blaming the U.S higher education system for the woes.”(1). In other words, people are blaming our education system for the problems they face in the economy. The person is also saying many protesters are to blame for making poor life choices. For example, in this article there is a 28 yearold college student that had debt and useless degree. The student said I made the choices that got me here. However, my choices were led by failed institutions (1). Here is an emblem point that this person is making fun of students who think the U.S education system owes them something when they are just at angry the world.
In a similar way, an article for CNN called “Think it is Just a Phase? “Then You Just Don’t Get It” by Douglas Ruskoff. He is not necessarily saying that he agrees with the Wall Street Occupy Movement, but that the movement is centered on the idea of economic inequality which is a serious issue that has to be dealt with. Even though, some people say they have no idea what the protesters are complaining about they do. People know that something need to change about the in how businesses are being run and policies set by the government to help get the economy back on track ,if the economy is ever to get out of the recession facing America today.
In conclusion, even though the writers have different perspectives about the Wall Street Occupy Movement, all realize there need to be different policies if the economy will ever get better. In addition, there needs to be a way to create jobs for middle class workers in which so many are unemployed and homeless. I think the Wall Street Occupy Movement is one of the first steps to waking up those big corporations because they are abusing their power and have to face the consequences. I agree with the idea that working class citizens need to come together in order to get America back to the living standards it had before the recession.
