The power of technology

Sarah Elgohary Global exam Dr zika Janer Global Studies Exam #3: There is no denying that technology has changed the way that global citizens receive, interpret, and react to information. The creation of the internet, at the turn of the twenty-first century, came about the rapid evolution of devices that allow quick and easy communication. The role of consumers has changed due the increased interactions that people have with each other because of technology and media. As a result, people need to realize that they are no longer just regular citizens, but they are becoming global citizens. As global citizens, people need to acknowledge how powerful the agency of the consumer is in our globalized world. In other words, the advances in technology have not made consumers powerless, but people need to know how to use the media’s information and cultural products to make informed decisions and take actions such as protesting to improve social problems. As a result, consumers cannot...

My novel and my beautiful life

Stop racism

Subject: Send a letter: Protect Students - Stand With Huda  Body: Friend, I wrote a letter for the Action Network letter campaign: Protect Students - Stand With Huda . Schools must support students not fan the flames of hate, harassment, and bullying. It is never okay for a school to throw a child under the bus and to allow parents to harass and bully a student. East Williston School District and The Wheatley School failed Huda by misleading the public about her graduation speech, contributing to her harassment and bullying, and refusing to condemn the harassment and bullying she faced from parents. Huda is a 17-year-old American Muslim Pakistani student. On June 20th, Huda gave a graduation speech that was approved by the school principal (Dr. Feeney). Email records prove that Huda submitted her speech to Dr. Feeney on June 19th. He acknowledged receiving it via email, printed it, and the speech was on the podium for Huda when it was her time to speak. The speech that Huda ...

Durkheim on education

Durkheim View on Education Education is the principal that all of society is based upon. In order to fully understand the problem of educational inequality, we must analyze all of the different aspects that cause it. In order to understand how we developed into our current society, with a very rigid education system, we need to understand how Durkheim views education as a religion, in the context of the social integration of society. Durkheim believed that all of society is held together by religion; and the solidarity of groups, however, it is not religion in the way that we normally understand it. Durkheim sees anywhere that people organize and have repeated social interactions, in the form of a ritual, as religion. In addition, in order to understand why solidarity is so important to Durkheim, we need to analyze education within two aspects. (1)how Durkheim would view the current education model, as a “religion” where the foundations of beliefs are based on a system of rituals ...

Education as a bureaucracy

Sarah Elgohary  Soc 18a  Max Weber on Education      Human beings experience many social problems, but most people tend to ignore the most important dilemma, which is the inequality of the education system. Even though one important goal of the education system is to prepare students for life so they can become successful and productive members of society, there has been a huge transformation in how schools were run traditionally compared to how they are run today. The traditional school was a one-room school house with one teacher, there were no grade levels, and students did not receive grades for class. However, the modern school system has become McDonaldized (ie rationalized) and is now a bureaucracy with a hierarchy of grades. The current education system has become rationalized to the point where the college administrator's as only care about the number of students enrolled in the class. There is no emphasis on the well-being of the students. This p...

People tend to look at these problems, levels, and structures of society at face value. But in order to understand why society is the way it is, people have to be like sociologists and peel away the layers individually Wright Mills came up with the term “sociological imagination.”( https://www.cpp.edu/~plin/EWS375/The%20Sociological%20Imagination) . Mills was trying to say that in order for people to understand the world they need to peel away the layers of society, which means that people need to analyze a specific aspect of society in terms of all th...

Helping people

hunter  What areas of social work interest you particularly? Helping others through social work is one of my main goals and passions in life. I have always wanted to advocate for people. I have cerebral palsy, which has made me realize how important it is to convey your own ideas and messages. Having cerebral palsy makes me realize how important it is to independently convey your own messages and communicate your ideas in a positive light. My experience with cerebral palsy has taught me that only the individual can truly advocate for themselves. I have learned that even though people can advocate for you with your best interests at heart with the best interests and intentions to help you (your parents, friends or your support system) can advocate for you, the best way to show how strongly you feel on an issue is to advocate for yourself. Therefore, my life experiences and perspectives enhance my desire to teach any individual self advocacyself-advocacy skills so they never s...
